One is rough machining, and the other is fine machining. The latter pays more attention to detail than the former.

Rough machining mainly serves the following purposes:

1. After dividing the workpiece machining into stages, rough machining allows for large cutting depths and feed rates. Machining errors caused by its large machining allowance and high cutting forces can be gradually corrected through semi-finishing and finishing, ensuring machining quality.

2. It allows for the rational use of machining equipment. Rough machining and finishing have different requirements for machining equipment. After dividing the machining into stages, the characteristics of rough and finishing equipment can be fully utilized. Rational use of equipment improves production efficiency. Rough machining equipment has high power, high efficiency, and high rigidity. Finishing equipment has high precision, small errors, and meets drawing requirements.

3. Rough machining first allows for the timely detection of defects in the workpiece blank. Various defects in the blank, such as sand holes, air holes, and insufficient machining allowance, can be detected after rough machining, facilitating timely repair or decision to scrap the workpiece, avoiding waste of time and money in continued processing.
