Roughing is a preliminary machining process primarily aimed at removing a significant amount of material and quickly shaping the workpiece. This method typically prioritizes efficiency and production speed over extremely high surface finish. Key functions of roughing include:

1. As the first stage of the machining process, roughing allows for rapid material removal through larger cutting depths and feed rates. Due to the larger machining allowance, the cutting force also increases accordingly. Therefore, machining errors can be gradually corrected in subsequent semi-finishing and finishing steps to ensure the overall quality of the machining process.

2. Roughing and finishing have different equipment requirements. Roughing equipment typically requires higher power, higher efficiency, and better structural rigidity, while finishing equipment emphasizes precision and error control. Utilizing the characteristics of these two types of equipment effectively can improve production efficiency and optimize resource allocation.

3. The roughing stage allows for the timely detection of defects in the workpiece blank, such as sand holes, porosity, or insufficient machining allowance. These defects become apparent after roughing, facilitating timely repairs or decision to scrap the workpiece, thus avoiding unnecessary losses in subsequent machining processes. Rough machining places high demands on cutting tools because it involves large machining allowances, high speeds, and generates a significant amount of heat. Therefore, high-hardness alloy materials are typically chosen for cutting tools in rough machining, and appropriate heat dissipation measures, such as oil baths or air cooling, are taken to extend the tool's lifespan.
