The footwear industry is one of the largest and most complete manufacturing sectors worldwide. It connects upstream industries including leather, textile, chemical and machinery, and is closely linked with sports fashion and cross-border e-commerce. As a dominant export sector of China's light industry, China's footwear manufacturing has long occupied a leading position globally, with more than half of the world's total output and a large share of global exports. Understanding the market scale, production layout, trade flow and structural changes of this industry is essential for footwear foreign trade work, product selection, quotation and market judgment.

1. Global Market Scale and Production Layout

According to the World Footwear Yearbook 2025 released by APICCAPS, global footwear production reached around 23.9 billion pairs in 2024, with a year-on-year increase of 6.9%. The market rebounded obviously after the downturn in 2023. Global footwear export volume rose by 4.6% year on year. Asia remains the core production base, contributing approximately 85.1% of global exports. Global footwear consumption keeps growing steadily. Sports shoes are the fastest-growing segment, especially running shoes and training shoes. Smart footwear is emerging as a new growth opportunity.

The table below shows major footwear exporting countries by export volume in 2024:

Rank Country/Region Export Volume (Billion Pairs) Global Share
1 China 92.03 62.2%
2 Vietnam 15.83 10.7%
3 Indonesia 6.01 4.1%
4 Germany 3.51 2.4%
5 India 2.66 1.8%
6 Turkey 2.38 1.6%

2. China Footwear Industry: Output, Export and Industrial Clusters

China is the world's largest footwear producer and exporter. Industry estimates show that China's total footwear output hit about 13.8 billion pairs in 2024, accounting for over 50% of global production. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows China exported around 9.202 billion pairs of footwear in 2024, up 3.3% year on year, while the export value reached 333.6 billion RMB, down 3.8% year on year. This "volume up, price down" trend indicates pressure on average export prices.

In terms of US dollars, China's total footwear export value was roughly 108 billion USD in 2024, rising 2.9% year on year. The United States, EU and ASEAN are the top three markets. Exports to the US reached about 13.24 billion USD, taking up 28.9%; exports to the EU were around 10.86 billion USD, accounting for 23.7%.

3. Key Industry Trends

First, manufacturing orders keep moving to Southeast Asia. Vietnam and Indonesia enjoy advantages in labor cost and tariff policies. They keep receiving transferred production capacity from China. China still wins by fast lead time, complete supply chain and flexible production. Southeast Asia is more competitive for basic low-cost styles.

Second, price competition coexists with industrial upgrading. Low-value orders face fierce price wars. Meanwhile, high value-added products such as functional sports shoes grow faster. More factories are shifting from mass production to high-quality and customized goods.

Third, cross-border e-commerce and brand globalization develop rapidly. Independent websites, TikTok Shop and AliExpress change traditional distribution channels. Factories in Jinjiang and other regions are transforming from pure OEM and ODM manufacturing to self-owned brand export.

4. Suggestions for Foreign Trade Practitioners

Footwear foreign trade competition is no longer only about low prices. Buyers pay more attention to supply chain stability, product segmentation and service capacity. As salesmen focusing on sports shoes, baseball shoes and related products, tracking global capacity changes, local popular styles and export prices helps you select suitable markets and quote reasonably. When competing with Southeast Asian suppliers, you can highlight China's strength in flexible customization and reliable delivery schedule.
